Quotes:A key to achieving this, Couch and other researchers say, is to capture the carbon dioxide and send it underground instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.

Many technologies now being developed are trying to perfect this so-called carbon-capture technique.

"To reduce [emissions] to zero, you've got to capture the carbon and stick it in the ground," Couch said.

comment: i like this idea i think it would be really cool if they come up with away to trap the carbon from getting in to the air. I also think if this is a good alternative for the environment and for the cost of everything that this would be a smart move to burn coal instead.

question: my question is what happens to the carbon if we do trap it underground is there any environmental problems that will come of this?

Nuclear power

Quotes:Yet, Brand points out: "Nuclear certainly has problems—accidents, waste storage, high construction costs, and the possible use of nuclear fuel for weapons." Most experts agree that such problems are no small drawback to forging ahead with new nukes. So despite shifting attitudes, atomic allergy has eased only slightly if at all among the bulk of prominent environmental leaders. Analysts also point to other problems, such as unresolved waste questions and limited public input on the whole issue of nuclear power.
"If you have a way to make electricity, then we say, make as much as you can."

"We can't go back, we can only go forward," said Swapnesh Malhotra, a spokesman for India's atomic energy department. "Life depends on energy, and I ask, where do we get it? We will get it somewhere."

comments: this article was a lot to take in and try to understand but after reading this it raises a lot of questions like what happens if it explodes what does that mean for all the citizens? When i was reading i realized that some people are just thinking about ways to make energy and not thinking about what that might mean in the future. we need to be thinking about what is best for the environment because when it comes down to it electricity wont even matter if the world is all polluted and horrible. i think the public needs to get more involved and that we can go back and find better ways to move forward and get energy from somewhere else. I don't say if we can make it make as much as we can i say if we can make it then find the best way to make it with out problems.

Question: if the public is not involved why is that is it because we are not informed about this topic?

A whole day without media or gadgets that didn't exist before 1984.

a normal Thursday morning I would check my phone for the time and to see if anyone has tried to reach me. I made this day very different I woke up without checking my phone instead i just asked my sister what time it was and from there i got ready for the day at my aunts house in Bay area. I choice to make thanksgiving my day of no media because i knew there would be lots of people around to talk to and it was a good day to think about why i am thankful for my phone and Ipod and whatever else that goes under that category. After taking a shower and getting dress I joined my aunt and grandma in the kitchen to help them set up and cook for thanksgiving dinner. when people started to arrive I would greet them and talk for awhile. since I see them maybe 3 times a year it can be awkward, what was hard for me this day without my phone is usually if things got awkward or quite i could just look down at my phone and go on facebook or something. This made me have to come up with things to say. I had my little cousins around so it was really fun playing with them and stuff that part was so easy and entertaining because they can keep you entertained for hours plus i don't like having my phone around little kids because they always take it from me and then its lost and i have to go find it.. The hardest part was not having my phone or Facebook all day. TV and computer are pretty easy for me to not have unless there is a show on that night but it was thanksgiving so TV didn't even cross my mind.

communication was really easy for me on this day because everyone I needed to talk to was all with me except friends I really wanted to text some people happy thanksgiving but I refrained from doing so. that was pretty hard and I felt a little bad.

I was surprised by one thing and that is i use my phone as comfort tool. Its like I need it. It also helps me feel less awkward in awkward situations. That was one thing about this day that i found interesting and surprising.

articles

fields of poison
1.
1. Write a short reflection on each of your readings.

this article talks about the farm workers and the people that are around the chemicals and pesticides used in crops getting really sick. symptoms range from nausea, dizziness, numbness to death and cancer. it talks about it being air born. it also talks about how California is trying to do better because of articles on this topic. something interesting i found is how even though they have laws they are never really enforced the commissioners only issue a few fines and that is just to show they are "doing something".

2. If you were going dedicate your energies to champion one of the issues in any of the writings, which would you choose and why? In your opinion, what is it about your particular choice that ranks it above all others?
I think i would choose the topic of the workers and the sickness that have been caused by these chemicals i would focus on alternatives and the working laws to champion. i would also make sure that i tie everything back to how this effects everyone and not just the people working.

the financial crisis and world hunger
1. Write a short reflection on each of your readings.
this one is talking about micro loans and a man who started them and how they have helped many people to better there lives. it talks about exploring options for energy sources that are environmentally friendly . it talks about restrictions and distortion have been left in place have devastating consequences for poor nations.

2. If you were going dedicate your energies to champion one of the issues in
any of the writings, which would you choose and why? In your opinion, what is it about your particular choice that ranks it above all others?
i would choose to learn more about micro loans i think this is a great idea and even though it may be hard for america to keep track of micro loans i think they would benefit alot of people. i also look at it as if you don't need that much money say you need 5,000 dollars and they say they can only loan you 15,000 it will be hard for someone to pay back this to me leads to the fall of an economy because banks give out to big of loans that people cant pay back so maybe if we had smaller loans we could satisfy the people and keep the economy strong. this is what i would spend my energy on.

the scope of the world food crisis
1. Write a short reflection on each of your readings.
this was about food prices going up for crops like soybeans, rice, wheat, and corn because of oil prices going up. some countries are experiencing starvation where food is being made there but is being distributed out because they cant eat that and it cost more for them.
2. If you were going dedicate your energies to champion one of the issues in any of the writings, which would you choose and why? In your opinion, what is it about your particular choice that ranks it above all others?

QQC

rain forest article one
quote:two decades an estimated two million acres were cleared annually, an area more then half the size of Connecticut.
i think this it really sad and even though government has slowed down illegal logging and exporting for awhile i don't think thats good enough even though Indonesia provides 86 percent of the worlds supply we need to start looking at other alternatives.

freshwater article two
quote: "to many users for not enough water"

I really thought this part of the reading was interest it talks about how it was good got 300 generations and that you could start to feel it in the tress and in the fish poor condition that the river was suffering and there were all these signs. and that the underlying source of this problem was a resource crises and to me that is very true and really scary because as we become more over populated we will run in to much more troubles with are water and earth as a whole.

desert article 3
quote: "rats, everywhere"
i think its really gross but interesting because i did not know that and something i found more interesting is that two thirds of all known extinction worldwide has been on islands.

Ecosystems:everything is connected

Generate 3 essay questions and answers

in your eyes explain what it mean to you how everything connected?

in my eyes it mean that everything is connected because even though orginisms are in there own ecosystem as the reading says" there are no bounders organisms are free to move." not only that but ecosystems need five components they are energy, minerals nutrients, water, oxegen, and living orgnisms. this is a huge part that connects everything because its a basic thing that we all share.

go in dept about the natural selection procces and give an example of what this means?

natural selection is when an organism is best suited for an environment
and what happens is the one who is more fit for the area passes on there traits to there offspring's and then that organism after generations starts to change the characteristics of the population. as it continues it becomes evolution. This is when a specie evolves like if its in a cold area the organism might start getting more hairy to keep them warm and so on.

what are your views on the Darwin theory?

I have spent a lot of time looking in to his ideas on evolution. My only thing is it conflicts with the beliefs that I have grown up with and have been told for the majority of my life. That is that god has created humans and other organisms. I feel like I get faith and science mixed up. I can totally see where Darwin is going with this adaption/evolution and even though I totally agree and believe in what he is saying because it makes sense and god creating us doesn't make sense to me because there is no proof or logic behind it other then faith. To really answer this question i would have to say I believe in both in away i cant choose one way of thinking.

Research and summarize a specific type of planting you would like to see created in our garden this semester.

Tropical Hibiscus
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Hawaiian Sunset'

these are known to grow well in san diego. they will make the garden really pretty. sun exposure is full which is prefect. spacing is 6 to 8 ft to grow. water regularly and do not over water for these plants to grow. soil ph requirements are neutral 6.6 to 7.5/acidic. grow rate is fast which is perfect for are class. good seasons is winter and we are going in to winter which is perfect. soil type loam, sand. i think this will be good to have in garden.
